How the recommendation is worked out β€” and where judgement still matters

Every material is scored against every adhesive in the table below (0 = hopeless, 5 = ideal). A joint is only as good as its weakest side, so the two scores are combined with the lower one weighted most heavily. Each condition you tick then adds weight to the adhesives that carry that property and removes the ones that cannot do it at all, and the load you choose filters out anything too weak for the job.

Two things the table cannot do for you. Low-surface-energy plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE and most "non-stick" surfaces) resist almost everything; they need a specialised adhesive plus a primer, flame or plasma treatment, or mechanical fixing β€” the warnings above flag them. And surface prep beats adhesive choice: clean, dry, degreased and lightly abraded will outperform an expensive glue on a greasy surface every time.

Cure times assume room temperature and average humidity; cold and thick glue lines slow everything down. This is guidance for household, workshop and craft work β€” for anything structural, load-bearing, safety-critical or involving gas, water pressure or vehicles, follow the manufacturer's data sheet and use a rated product.
