Board-foot formula

Board feet = thickness × width × length ÷ 12, with thickness and width in inches and length in feet. This is the nominal size — a dressed 2×6 actually measures about 1½" × 5½" but is still sold by its nominal 2×6 board footage. Hardwoods are typically priced per board foot; softwood construction lumber is usually priced per piece.
