Protect hedgehogs and other wildlife when planning a bonfire.

Animals can return to a pile: check immediately before lighting, even if it was checked earlier.

Consider attending an organised display instead of having a bonfire. Choose a site away from wildlife habitats and check local rules and fire service guidance. Build the pile on the day it will be lit, not days beforehand. Immediately before lighting, move the whole pile by hand and check underneath for animals. Check carefully with a torch, including the centre and bottom; listen for movement. Use a broom handle or pole to lift sections gently, never a fork or rake. If you find an animal, stop and follow RSPCA advice before proceeding. Collect litter only when it is safe and cool, keeping animals away from debris.
