The four quadrants

Coordinates are written (x, y) — along the corridor (x), then up the stairs (y).
• Q1 (+, +) top-right · Q2 (−, +) top-left · Q3 (−, −) bottom-left · Q4 (+, −) bottom-right.
• On the axes themselves, one coordinate is 0.
• (2, 3) and (3, 2) are different points — order matters!

Real-world use: maps, GPS, computer screens and chessboards all use coordinates — just with different labels for the axes.
