Earth turns once a day, so any object moving over the ground โ artillery shells, long-range
rockets, weather systems โ is deflected right of its motion in the Northern Hemisphere, left in the Southern,
with zero effect at the equator growing to maximum at the poles. The ball on the disk flies perfectly straight
through the air; the curve you see is the disk rotating underneath โ exactly how "Coriolis force" is a
consequence of choosing a rotating viewpoint.
For storms the deflection is everything: air rushing toward a low-pressure centre gets turned
aside and settles into rotation โ counterclockwise in the north, clockwise in the south. Coriolis is why
hurricanes can't form within ~5ยฐ of the equator and why trade winds blow steadily from the east.
The sink myth: your bathtub's whirlpool direction is set by its shape and leftover motion โ the Coriolis
effect is millions of times too weak at sink scale.
