🀝 Mutual Credit Ledger

A working money system for a street, a club or a community β€” with no bank in the middle. Every member starts at zero. Every exchange debits one member and credits another by exactly the same amount, so the ledger always sums to zero: credit is created by helping each other and destroyed when the favour is returned. No interest, no fees, no account, and the data lives only in this browser β€” export the file to hand the ledger around at a meeting.

No bank. Money appears the moment help happens and vanishes the moment it's returned. Nothing to borrow, nothing to owe a stranger.
No interest. Going into debit costs exactly nothing β€” that's the point. The community caps the debit instead of charging for it.
Zero-sum, provably. Every entry has two sides. The total of all balances is always 0.00 β€” the tool checks it after every write, so the ledger cannot silently inflate.
No server, ever. The ledger is a file you own. Print it, hand it on a memory stick, email it β€” or run three copies and reconcile over tea.

Mutual credit is the oldest money design there is β€” ledger money β€” and it is what time banks and LETS schemes have run on since the 1980s. In the UK, community exchange systems are legal and well-established (don't imitate official coins or banknotes, and pounds-based ledgers may have tax implications for regular trading β€” ask a professional if you scale up). This tool is informational and stores data only in your browser. Last reviewed: 2026-09-23.
