Each planet gets a procedurally painted texture from its real surface/atmosphere recipe: Mercury from cratered terrain via fractal noise, Venus with its sulphuric-acid cloud deck and reversed spin, Earth as a real ocean–land–cloud map, Mars with the Tharsis bulge and polar ice caps, Jupiter with its banded zonal jets (drawn from the real latitudinal bands) and the Great Red Spot, Saturn with soft pale bands and its 10 m-thick ice rings, and the ice giants in their methane haze. Lighting is a true Lambert term: brightness ∝ cos(angle between surface normal and sunlight) — the same physics that makes Venus show a bright crescent phase in a telescope.
