All sizes and distances here are the real ones: the Sun is 695,700 km across, Earth 12,742 km, and the Moon is 384,400 km away β€” about 60 Earth radii (at that scale the planets themselves are barely pixels). Mars is 78 million km farther out, Neptune 4.5 billion km, and Pluto's orbit averages 5.9 billion km. If Earth were a marble (1 cm), the Moon would be 30 cm away, the Sun 117 m across at 1.2 km, and Neptune 23 km out β€” with nothing in between. Light, the fastest thing there is, takes 1.3 s from Moon to Earth, 8.3 minutes from Sun to Earth, and 4.2 hours from the Sun to Neptune. The asteroid belt is not a dense ring either: asteroids are millions of km apart. This emptiness is why every other solar-system diagram cheats β€” the planets simply cannot all be drawn to scale and seen.
