Waves are built by three things: how hard the wind blows, how far it blows over open water, and how long it keeps blowing. This works out which of the three is holding your sea state back, using the JONSWAP fetch-growth relations, and turns it into the numbers that actually matter on the water — significant height, the biggest wave you should expect, period, steepness and whether the far shore is a lee or a trap.
