How the clues are chosen and the hunt is timed

How do you make a Halloween scavenger hunt?

Hide one clue per stopping point, and make each clue point at the next place rather than at the prize. This tool writes the riddles, orders the stops, and adds a start card and a finish card: the last clue always sends them back to the grown-up with the sweets. Print two cards to a sheet, cut, and hide them in order.

What makes a good clue for children?

A good riddle describes what the hiding place does, not what it looks like: "I hum all night and keep the milk cold" is solvable by a six-year-old; "I am white and tall" is not. The easy setting uses one obvious feature per clue, the tricky setting adds a second clause that misdirects once.

How long should a scavenger hunt take?

Twenty to forty minutes for eight clues indoors, longer outside where the walking is real. The planner adds two minutes of walking for each indoor clue, four for a garden and six for a street or park, plus one to three minutes of thinking, so eight indoor clues comes out around 30 minutes and twelve park clues around an hour and a half.

How do you keep it safe outside?

Set a meeting point before anyone starts, keep children in pairs, and make the finish the place you are standing rather than a car or a road. Reflective strips and a torch for a street hunt after dark; the clue at any road crossing is read by the adult, not the child.

      What should the prize be?

One small bag of sweets or a single chocolate coin per child at the finish, plus a spare in case someone arrives upset. The hunt is the entertainment; the prize only has to mark the end.
