Albert Einstein derived special relativity with an astonishingly simple thought experiment: a "light clock" bouncing a photon between two mirrors. Because the speed of light $c$ is constant for all observers, a moving clock's photon must travel a longer diagonal path—proving that time itself physically slows down for moving objects!
